No one deserves the horrible fate of freezing to death because the homeless can’t afford decent protective clothing. We believe everyone deserves warmth, protection and dignity.

Sheltersuit is a non-profit organization founded by Bas Timmer in 2014, providing immediate shelter to the homeless, while using upcycled materials and providing jobs.

Sheltersuit, a jacket turns into a sleeping bag – realized by Dutch designer Bas Timmer back in 2014 – after one of his friend’s homeless father died from hypothermia. From giving one piece as a donation to a homelessman, it became another two, then became ten, hundreds and thousands.

Based on the report from the LinkedIn of World Economic Forum a week ago, Sheltersuit has made 12.500 suits from upcycled materials for the homeless in Europe, South Africa, and US and produced by the Syrian refugees.

“A jacket doesn’t take you off the street, but it’s a first step. A sheltersuit is a stepping stone to a better future. It giving somebody dignity, warmth,” said Bas Timmer during an online statement to the Worls Economic Forum. “If I have to distribute 10.000 suits and it saves 1 life, it’s more than worth it,” he added.

For this winter, the foundation has given out 150 sheltersuits across The Netherlands in December 2020, offering warm and protection against the cold. During the sheltersuits distribution to Alkmaar city, the team was accompanied by German News Channel, ARD – in making a short documentary of the Sheltersuit Foundation – it will be aired on January 23rd, 2020 in ARD Mediathek & Das Errste.

Besides the Sheltersuits, the organization also produced the Shelterbag, a portable, sheltered bed that rolls up into a bag. Designed to be adaptable and flexible, to provide the most comfort.

The Sheltersuits are made of high quality TenCate Tent fabric, Nomad sleeping bags and 3M Thinsulate. All materials applied are donated rest materials that have been up-cycled into the end product. To get involved, you can donate your sleeping bags and the Sheltersuit team will use them as the inner lining of both the Sheltersuit and Shelterbag, to ensure the warmth, protection and dignity to those in need.

Other way to get involved, you can also do the Sheltersuit Sleep Out activity, a sleep out in solidarity with your neighbors experiencing homelessness to get a glimpse of the true reality that 150 million people face everyday and raise money for the homeless.

For payment donation, go to Sheltersuit official website for more info. Your donation will be used to continue to: – make Sheltersuits and invest in their volunteers and employees – make the production of Sheltersuits and Shelterbags which we distribute to the homeless for FREE – create more jobs for people with a distance to the labour market – hold campaigns to raise awareness for the homeless problem and to raise funding.
