Seven Ways To Be TVDB – Hyères, France

In his work, digital co-exists with traditional craftsmanship, defying the divide between crafts and innovation. He is the creator of his own technicolour universe and his impeccably finished couture collections with strong influences of streetwear reverberate.

Tom Van Der Borght or TVDB, an established designer from Belgium – is the fashion competition category winner of 35th International Hyères Festival in Villa Noailles, France – as announced by the committee on 18 October 2020.

Hyères Festival, founded by Jean-Pierre Blanc – aims to support and promote the work of young creators in fashion, photography and fashion accessories. Every year, the festival organizes around three contests, exhibitions and discussions.

As reported in Vogue, the winning menswear collection named “Seven Ways to be TVDB,” was a densely embroidered and intarsia-ed tour de force, made from recycled climbing ropes, sequins, prints-on-polyester 3D space mesh, plastic leftovers, braided elastic, and plexitube weaving. Each piece is a work of art with embroideries as his expression on diary on each model wearing masks covered in transparent sequins or spiky protrusions.

TVDB is also focusing on using overstocks from companies and flea markets. For the leather, TVDB buying the materials from the automobile industries that producing materials for car seats and stacking them in the warehouse because of the pandemic. And from the flea markets he collected the wool fabrics. Besides that, he uses the plastic leftovers for the details on the fabrics and accessories with genial finishing. 

The Grand Prix of the Jury Première Vision includes a €20,000 award, a collaborative project with the Chanel Métiers d’Art worth up to €20,000, and a fashion show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin. The Belgian designer’s work also appealed to the people of Hyères and they granted him their Public Prize.

As stated in his bio, TVDB, a graduate from Stedelijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten Sint Niklaas with Triumph Inspiration Award 2011 – he is not only exploring the boundaries of traditional beauty. He boldly crosses them to create his own standard of beauty. Bold combinations of bright colors, psychedelic graphics and textures make for a true bombardment of the senses. TVDB is always on the look-out for the unconventional and puts into question mainstream social structures. 

His garments serve as armor for strong super humans in an urban setting. Yet all is not serious. A sense of humor and self-depreciative playfulness show in the way he teasingly covers and reveals in his designs. Another hint of this can be seen in his use of extreme detailing.

After winning  the ASVOFF ‘05 award for best emerging talent with his fashionmovie ’Danny’, he founded his label on 1st january 2013. Only two weeks after starting up his business, he won the Premium Young Designer Award during Berlin Fashion Week FW13 with his latest collection ‘Aponycalypse’. Continued by winning the C&A Reimagine Design Challenge winner.

In the interview with Metal Magazine, as a fashion designer, Tom Van der Borght said: “I think I’m like a ‘hunter’ that Björk sings about in her album Homogenic, a species that’s always on a quest, on a search for something new, fresh, exciting, unexpected.”
