“It’s not for you, it’s for everyone.” – New York, United States

It is a statement made by a fashion designer who already started making clothes from a very young age – bleaching T-shirts, reconstructing jeans pants patterns,  designing and selling pieces to consignment stores on the Lower East Side. He also learned house and hip hop music with her brothers. For his design collections, he would bike around New York to be inspired by pedestrians’ fashion items and styles. His name is Telfar Clemens. That is the motto of his fashion brand “Telfar”: “It’s not for you, it’s for everyone.”

In the interview with British Vogue‘s reporter Lynette Nylander, they mentioned that they want to dispel the idea of diversity. This is not an inclusive casting strategy or a one-time campaign,” Radboy explains. “The very notion of diversity upholds what we know, that there is an unchanging power structure and that’s, like, included in someone else’s world. Inclusion and diversity have now become statements that people in power like to hear.” Clemens added, “I just want to be everywhere, truly global. I want to dress everybody.” His message for all communities is hard to resist.

In 2005 Clemens had his first fashion show, doing everything himself, styling clothes on friends and creating performance videos. He soon started collaborating with stylist Avena Gallagher and creative director Babak Radboy. Together with his creative director, they both see the future of Telfar much how they’ve played it in the past.

In 2017, Clemens was the recipient of the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America). He invested the prize into the production of the Telfar Shopping Bag with vegan leather which has become a hit, nicknamed the ‘Bushwick Birkin’. To The New Yorker he stated that he would be able to make clothes that ranged in size from extra-extra-small to extra-extra-large, that people in the Midwest (of USA) would be able to buy. He would show that ubiquity did not have to mean monotony.

During the pandemic, Clemens has message for us through BOF News: “We have to stick together and figure out what we all want to do as a team, moving forward.”
